City-licensed guides

The squares are the city's compass.

The city was laid out in 1733 as a grid of wards around open squares. Twenty-two survive, and every walk we lead is drawn between them.

Squares still standing today

The suppers keep the city close.

Shrimp and grits, benne wafers, warm pralines and a cup of Lowcountry boil, all within a short walk of Chippewa Square.

Lowcountry boil

Biscuits

Six tastings, six stops.

Every stop on the Supper Stroll is a kitchen we have eaten at for years: family places, a candy counter, a back-of-house we are let into. It adds up to dinner.

Stop 1

Shrimp and grits

Stone-ground grits, local shrimp and a little tasso gravy.

Stop 2

Benne wafers

The sesame cookie the city has baked for two hundred years.

Stop 3

Warm pralines

Straight off the marble at a candy counter near the river.

Stop 4

Pimento cheese on a biscuit

A buttermilk biscuit, still warm, and a sharp, peppery spread.

Stop 5

Lowcountry boil

Shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes, served in a paper cup.

Stop 6

Peach hand pie and sweet tea

Georgia peaches in a crimped crust, and a glass of tea to finish.

Vegetarian and gluten-free swaps at every stop when you book ahead.

Twelve years of slow afternoons.

Families, honeymooners, reunions and locals who thought they knew the place. Most of them heard about us from someone who walked with us first.

Born two squares over.

Billie Ravenel grew up two squares from our tour desk and spent nine years as a house-museum docent. Her husband, Thaddeus Larkin, cooked on the line for a decade and now builds every food tour we run.

Today there are nine of us, every guide licensed by the city, and we still walk every route ourselves before the season starts.

What guests tell their friends.

Billie walked us through nine squares and I never once looked at my phone. Best two hours of our anniversary trip.

Six tastings sounded small. We skipped dinner. The praline stop alone was worth the $89.

Dwayne

I took my parents, both in their seventies. Thaddeus planned every stop around the shade and a bench.

How far do we walk?

About 1.5 miles on the Squares Walk and 2 miles on the Supper Stroll, at an easy pace with a stop every few blocks. Every route is planned around shade and benches.

What if it rains?

A little rain, we walk, and we bring umbrellas. If a thunderstorm closes in, we move you to another walk or refund you in full. Your choice.

Can I bring the kids?

Yes. Kids 6–12 are $19 on the Squares Walk and under 6 walk free. Strollers are welcome; the brick sidewalks are bumpy, so we keep a big-wheeled spare at the desk.

Can you handle dietary needs?

Vegetarian and gluten-free swaps at every stop on the Supper Stroll. Tell us when you book and we will call ahead to each kitchen.

Where do we meet?

At our tour desk, 204 W Perry St, Savannah, GA 31401, steps from Chippewa Square. Look for the cream umbrella. Street parking and two garages are within three blocks.

Can we book a private walk?

Any route, any day, from $295 for up to 8 guests: reunions, weddings, birthdays and company groups. Call or text and we will plan it with you.
